Everything You Need To Know About Attic Insulation

Sufficient attic insulation is essential to a long-lasting roof. Experienced roofing contractors would agree that you need it for your indoor spaces to stay comfortable. It can reduce energy costs by preventing conditioned or warm air from escaping your living space.

Here’s what every homeowner should know about attic insulation.

What Is Attic Insulation and Why Does It Matter?

Insulation keeps heat from transferring from one material to another. It helps control air movement within your attic, which is necessary to lower heating and cooling costs. You can get it in various types, including loose-fill or batt fiberglass, cellulose, mineral wool and spray foam.

Having adequate attic insulation can help you save money on energy bills by reducing the heat lost or gained through the roof. It can improve your comfort by eliminating drafts. With adequate insulation, the likelihood of ice dams reduces. This issue is common in cold climates and can cause extensive damage to roofs.

What Are Its Different Types?

The most common type of attic insulation is lightweight material called loose-fill or batt fiberglass. Other options you have include cellulose, mineral wool and spray foam. They offer excellent thermal performance but would take roofing contractors more time to install.

R-Value Recommendation for Attic insulation

Insulation is essential to any energy-efficient home. The right amount can significantly reduce your heating and cooling costs. It’s also vital to know which material best suits your house.

The minimum R-value for attic insulation across the U.S. is R-30. Experts recommend R-49 and R-60 insulation for zones 1 through 3. Zone 4 includes most of the Pacific Northwest and middle horizontal parts of the U.S. These areas will benefit from insulation with an R-value of 38 since they are a little colder than their southern counterparts. If you live in a colder climate or zones 5-8, you want insulation with a value of at least R-49.2. Keep in mind that these numbers are simply the minimum recommendation. You can’t go wrong with higher R-values and a better-insulated space.
