4 Common Causes of Rippling Asphalt Shingles

Some homeowners may see buckled, rippled asphalt shingles on their roofs and think they are simply a cosmetic issue. However, rippled shingles usually also indicate an underlying moisture-related problem that needs to be addressed. Here, roofing contractors discuss four common causes of rippling asphalt shingles.

  1. Insufficient Ventilation: A well-ventilated attic allows moist, stale air to escape through the roof vents. If the ventilation system is either insufficient or blocked, moisture will not be able to escape and instead condense on the underside of the decking. Eventually, this will begin to affect the shingles, causing them to ripple and buckle.

  1. Wind Damage: In some cases, asphalt shingles have a rippled or buckled appearance because they have been hauled up by strong winds. Fortunately, affected shingles without creases or cracks can still be smoothed down with adhesives. Those shingles that show creasing or cracking, however, may need to be replaced altogether, especially if an excessive amount of ceramic-coated granules have already been dislodged.

  1. Roof Leaks: Leaks in the roof can sometimes go unnoticed when roofing maintenance is not up to date. Leaks may begin to seep through the shingles, then collect on the underlayment for a period before reaching the decking and, eventually, the inside of your home. Finally, the trapped moisture within the roofing system will warp the shingles surrounding the leak, resulting in rippling or buckling.

  1. Material Defects: In rare instances, manufacturing defects can cause asphalt shingles to exhibit a rippled or buckled appearance after installation. The good thing is that most roofs come with strong warranties on both the materials and installation, so addressing the issue is often a breeze.
