Flashings are one of the most integral components of the roofing system. They are often made of rust-resistant metal, including galvanized steel, copper or aluminum, and soldered into various shapes depending upon the function they must do. Regardless of its composition and the location where it is installed, one thing is for sure: it provides the roof extra protection against moisture penetration.
This type of flashing protects areas of the roof where dormers, chimneys and skylights protrude. Consisting of a series of metal angle pieces, it is installed by sections into a course of shingles so that it overlaps the section beneath it. Water can’t sneak in behind the flashing as long as its vertical edge is inserted under siding or capped with another counter flashing.
Residential and commercial roofing contractors install this type of flashing to cover areas where two roof planes meet. Shaped like a W, it is placed over the top of the building felt material during installation before finishing off the roof surface.
Installed under the roofing felt along the eaves and over roofing felt along the rakes, this type of flashing prevents water from seeping under these roof parts. With this installed, you don’t have to worry about your roof shedding water during rainy weather.
